An
external
data
reference,
also
kno
wn
as
an
imp ort,
is
a
reference
to
a
data
sym
b ol
that
is
not
dened
in
the
mo
dule.
External
data
references
are
no
w
allo
w
ed
in
program
les
and
XLs
if
they
are
linked
for
shared
data.
These
references
are
not
resolved
at
link
time
b ecause
the
Link
Editor
builds
one
load
mo
dule
at
a
time,
using
LINK
or
ADDXL .
Therefore,
the
Link
Editor
do es
not
kno
w
where
the
corresp onding
data
denition,
or
exp ort,
is
lo
cated.
The
data
item
could
b e
lo
cated
in
a
mo
dule
in
the
same
XL
or
in
another
XL.
Because
the
Link
Editor
cannot
resolve
external
data
references,
it
turns
the
reference
in
to
an
LST
data
imp ort
request.
It
also
allo cates
an
en
try
in
the
Data
Cross
Reference
T
able
(DXR
T)
for
the
unresolv
ed
data
reference.
The
instruction
used
to
reference
the
external
data
is
c
hanged
from
a
direct
reference
to
an
indirect
reference
through
the
D
XR
T.
This
indirection
enables
the
loader
to
lo
cate
data
denitions
for
eac
h
data
reference
and
initialize
the
D
XR
T
with
the
appropriate
v
alues
at
run
time.
External
data
references
can
b e
created

y
the
Link
Editor
for
Storage
and
Data
sym
b ols.
When
linking
to
form
a
program
le,
the
Link
Editor
creates
a
corresp onding
Data
Unsat
record
for
eac
h
Storage

ersal.
The
Link
Editor
