The
system
manager
creates
w
orkgroups
to
re ect
a
partitioning
OPERA
TION
of
the
system
w
orkload
and
con
trol
the
allo
cation
of
the
CPU
to
user
pro cesses
on
the
system.
There
is
essen
tially
no
hard
limit
to
the
maximum
n
um
b er
of
w
orkgroups
that
a
system
may
ha
v
e.
The
system
will
alwa
ys
b e
congured
with
v
e
default
w
orkgroups,
whic
h
exist
to
supp ort
system
pro cesses
and
to
pro
vide
bac
kw
ard
compatibility
.
Eac
h
w
orkgroup
consists
of
three
comp onen
ts,
a
name,
mem
b ership
criteria,
and
sc
heduling
c
haracteristics.
The
mem
b ership
criteria
( MEMB_LOGON
,
MEMB_PROGRAM
and
MEMB_QUEUE
parameters),
determine
pro cess
assignment.
W
orkgroup
assignment
is
made
at
eac
h
pro cess
create,
and
whenev
er
one
of
the
pro cess
attributes
on
whic
h
mem
b ership
can
b e
based
is
c
hanged,
and
when
w
orkgroups
are
purged
or
new
w
orkgroups
created.
Mem
b ership
con icts
are
resolved
b
y
k
eeping
the
w
orkgroups
in
an
ordered
list.
A
pro cess
is
assigned
to
the
rst
w
orkgroup
whose
mem
b ership
criteria
is
matched.
That
is,
a
rst-t
algorithm
is
used.
Once
a
match
is
found,
no
other
w
orkgroups
are
considered.
Therefore,
order
y
our
w
orkgroup
sp ecications
from
those
with
the
most
precise
mem
b ership
criteria
to
those
with
more
general
mem
b ership
criteria.
The
sc
heduling
c
haracteristics
dene
the
sc
heduling
p olicies
whic
h
gov
ern
pro cesses
within
the
w
orkgroup.
The
MPE/iX
Dispatcher
is
priorit y-driv
en,
giving
a
CPU
to
the
highest
priorit
y
pro cess
that
is
ready
to
run.
Eac
h
w
orkgroup
has
a
b
ase
and
a
limit
,
dening
the
priorit y
range
for
pro cesses
within
that
w
orkgroup.
Pro
cesses
will
b egin
their
Dispatcher
transactions
at
the
b
ase
priorit y
and
deca
y
tow
ards
the
limit
priority
as
they
consume
system
resources.
The
pro cess
priority
will
nev
er
drop
b elow
the
limit
of
the
w
orkgroup.
If
the
b o ost
prop ert
y
of
the
w
orkgroup
is
set
to
oscillate,
the
pro cess
priorit y
will
b e
reset
to
the
b
ase
priorit
y
when
it
deca
ys
to
the
limit
priorit y
.
Pro
cesses
completing
Dispatcher
transactions
(typically
via
a
terminal
read)
are
reset
to
the
b
ase
priority
.
Eac
h
of
the
v
e
system-dened
w
orkgroups
represen
ts
one
of
the
v
e
sc
heduling
sub queues,
AS,
BS,
CS,
DS
and
ES.
Their
only
mem
b ership
criteria
is
the
sche
duling
queue
attribute
.
F
or
example,
the
AS
Default
w
orkgroup
has
as
its
mem
b ership
criteria
MEMB_QUEUE=AS
.
These
w
orkgroups
app ear
last
in
the
ordered
list
so
that
the
Sc
heduler
can
guarantee
that
all
pro cesses
will
b e
assigned
to
a
w
orkgroup.
The
user-dened
w
orkgroups
can
con
trol
all
user
pro cesses.
System
pro cesses,
ho
w
ev
er,
are
placed
in
one
of
the
v
e
default
w
orkgroups
and
handled
appropriately
b
y
the
Sc
heduler.
The
system
manager
can
customize
the
c
haracteristics
of
the
default
w
orkgroups
to
re ect
the
CPU
sc
heduling
needs
of
the
v
arious
comp onen
ts
of
the
system
w
orkload.
