Traffic Isolation zones in interoperable fabrics
The TI feature allows you to control the flow of interswitch traffic by creating a dedicated path for
traffic flowing from a specific set of source ports through B-series switches using zones. TI is supported
in McDATA Fabric mode on B-series switches only. McDATA Fabric mode is the only mode that
supports the Defined Database, which is distributed and synchronized with all B-series switches in a
fabric. TI zones in edge fabrics are used to route traffic between real devices and proxy devices to
a particular EX_Port.
Use the M-series Preferred Path method to control which path application traffic uses with M-series
switches. When a Preferred Path fails, the ports assigned to that path are rerouted to other paths.
When the Preferred Path is reestablished, the ports assigned to that path are rerouted back. Use the
PDCM method for specific forced network control. You must perform this configuration at the director
or backbone platform level.
Enabling Fabric OS L2 SANtegrity (Fabric Binding)
SANtegrity is supported only in M-series fabrics running DCFM or EFCM management software. The
support for SANtegrity is for Fabric Binding.
Fabric OS 6.3.0 and later support the SANtegrity feature. For Fabric OS earlier than 6.3.0, B-series
switches run separate fabric security policies that are analogous to SANtegrity fabric binding.
Interaction between M-series SANtegrity and Fabric OS security policies is limited to M-series
SANtegrity requests initiated by the attached M-series switch. B-series security policies do not initiate
any requests or verifications to the M-series fabric. Downgrading to a Fabric OS version that does
not support SANtegrity interoperability without first disabling Fabric Binding causes ports to segment
upon subsequent initialization (for example, disabling and then enabling or adding a new ISL).
When Fabric Binding is turned on, only the switches that are currently in the fabric are included in
the binding list that is sent out.
Fabric Binding lets you configure a fabric binding membership list that each switch in a fabric can
use to validate between itself and its neighbor. SANtegrity Fabric Binding uses a list of domain ID
and WWN pairs and implies insistent domain IDs. B-series uses fabric data distribution of switch
connection control policies through a B-series fabric. Interoperability between mixed fabrics requires
switches to exchange and validate their fabric binding membership list upon bringing up an ISL.
When fabric binding is enabled, a fabric binding check is performed each time a link is initialized
to ensure that the switches are allowed to connect. If this check fails on either switch, the link will
segment.
DCFM and EFCM software facilitates the synchronization of the B-series and M-series policies and
should be used to configure and enable fabric binding in a mixed fabric. Configuration through other
management interfaces requires careful synchronization, and is not recommended.
Fabric Binding is always enabled or disabled on the entire fabric. DCFM and EFCM allows enabling
fabric binding either separately or as part of the Enterprise Fabric Mode feature. Enterprise Fabric
Mode is primarily used for FICON environments and turns on several features, including Fabric
Binding.
NOTE:
Turning off M-series Enterprise Fabric Mode does not turn off any of the features that it turned on.
