1 Configuring CIFS shares with Active Directory
HP X9000 File Serving Software includes a CIFS server that allows clients to access file shares on
an X9000 system. Clients see the same behavior as with a Windows CIFS server. You can use
the X9000 management console GUI and CLI and the Microsoft Management Console (MMC)
Share Management snap-in to create and manage CIFS shares. To manage share permissions,
use the MMC snap-in, which allows you to modify existing permissions.
You can make shares available from one or more individual nodes in an X9000 cluster or from
all nodes. In the examples in this document, shares are presented from all nodes. By default, MMC
and X9000 CLI operations are executed on all nodes. When using the GUI, it is sometimes necessary
to select multiple nodes when performing a multi-node operation such as deleting a share. Other
operations, such as starting the CIFS service, must be performed on one node at a time.
Preparing to use Active Directory
X9000 Software supports Active Directory domain controllers running Windows Server 2003 R2
or 2008 R2. All Symmetric Trusts are supported. The examples in this document show Windows
Server 2008 R2.
NOTE:
Asymmetric Trusts and signed LDAP are not currently supported with X9000 Software.
An X9000 cluster can be joined to only one Active Directory domain at a time. If Symmetric Trusts
have been set up between the joined Active Directory domain and other Active Directory domains,
the CIFS clients in the other domains can also map shares (that is, trusts are respected).
Before joining the cluster to an Active Directory domain, take the following steps:
1.
Configure DNS. All file serving nodes must be configured to use DNS services that can resolve
SRV records. Active Directory clients use SRV records to locate available Active Directory
domain servers. See “Configuring file serving nodes for CIFS” in the HP X9000 File Serving
Software File System User Guide
for more information.
2.
Synchronize clocks on X9000 servers and the Active Directory server. Attempts to join Active
Directory will fail if the clocks on the X9000 and Active Directory servers are more than a few
minutes apart. You can set the system time manually or configure NTP client services on the
X9000 nodes.
NOTE:
During installation of the X9000 6.0 release, NTP servers are configured automatically
on the node hosting the active management console. Other nodes synchronize their clocks
with the active management console node.
3.
Determine authorization credentials. To join an Active Directory domain, you must specify the
credentials of a user with Active Directory administration rights. The credentials are used once
when joining the domain and are not stored on the appliance.
4.
Create an Active Directory computer account for the cluster (optional). When the cluster joins
an Active Directory domain, each file serving node joining the domain takes one of these
actions:

If there is an existing computer account, the node logs into the account using its name.

If a computer account does not exist, attempts to create a new computer account in the
top level Active Directory Computers container.
It is common practice to partition an Active Directory domain into multiple Operations Units
(OUs). In this case, before attempting to join the domain, you must create a computer account
for each file serving node in the OU to which the X9000 has been assigned. Use the Active
Directory Users and Computers Management tool to create a computer account. Otherwise,
the X9000 may join the domain in the wrong place or it may fail to join at all because the
credentials supplied are valid only for the OU that the X9000 is intended to join.
