Otherwise, you could lose valuable information. For example: . Do not remove a hard disk card while the system is accessing it. . Do not remove a network card while you are connected to a network. . Do not remove a SCSI card while any of the SCSI devices connected to it are operating. Before removing a PC Card, stop it by clicking the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the System tray, then clicking to select the PC Card device. After the PC Card is stopped, it is safe to remove. Learning the Basics Learning the Basics Using your computer at the office Using your computer at the office By connecting an external monitor, external full-size keyboard, and a mouse, you can work with your notebook as if it were a standard office computer. An external monitor or projector connects to the RGB (monitor) port. Any USB device can connect to the USB ports. Backing up your work Back up all the files you create in case something happens to your computer. You can back up your files to different types of media such as CDs, DVDs, diskettes, or to a network, if available. To back up several files at one time, use the Microsoft® Windows® backup program preinstalled on the computer’s hard disk. For more information, see “Backing up your data to CDs with Windows XP” on page 208. HINT: Backing up all the files on your hard disk may take a considerable amount of time and multiple CDs/DVDs. You may prefer to use a high-capacity backup system, such as an external hard drive. Small files can be backed up on diskettes if an optional external diskette drive is available. Restoring your work To restore information from your backup media to your hard disk, use the Restore page in the backup program. Look in the 98 98 98 Powering down the computer online Help or your operating system documentation for information on restoring files. TECHNICAL NOTE: When restoring files, the backup program prompts you if you try to overwrite a file that already exists on the hard disk. Make sure the backup version is the one you want before overwriting the existing file. Powering down the computer Pushing the power button before shutting down the Windows operating system could cause you to lose your work. Make sure the system indicator panel’s disk light and the drive-in use light are off. If you turn off the power while a disk is being accessed, you may lose data or damage the disk and/or drive. When you power down the computer, you have three options to choose from: Turn Off (or Shut Down) Computer, Standby, and Hibernation. TECHNICAL NOTE: Before using any of these options to power down your computer, save your files and make sure the disk activity lights are off.
