Failure to follow these directions could result in minor bodily injury. To avoid damaging the computer’s screws, use a small Phillips screwdriver that is in good condition. Installing a memory module with the computer’s power on may damage the computer, the module, or both. The computer has two memory slots—Slot A and Slot B. You can install one or two memory modules. Before you install or remove a memory module, turn off the computer using the Start menu. If you install or remove a memory module while the computer is in Sleep or Hibernation mode, data will be lost. NOTE For this model, Slot A is the bottom slot. Slot B is the top slot. If only one memory module is to be installed, it must be installed in Slot A. 52 52 Getting Started Adding memory (optional) If the computer is on, begin at step 1; otherwise, skip to step 3. 1 Click Start. Start button Shut down button (Sample Image) Shut down button 2 Click the Shut down button in the lower-right corner of the Start menu. The computer closes all open programs, shuts down the operating system, and then turns off. 3 Unplug and remove any cables connected to the computer, including the AC adaptor. 4 Place a soft cloth on the work surface to prevent scratching the top cover of the computer, and then place the computer upside down on the cloth. 5 Remove the main battery. For information on removing the main battery, see “Removing the battery from the computer” on page 124. Static electricity can damage the memory module. Before you handle the module, touch a grounded metal surface to discharge any static electricity you may have built up. Avoid touching the connector on the memory module or on the computer. Grease or dust on the connector may cause memory access problems. 9 Carefully remove the new memory module from its antistatic packaging, without touching its connector. 10 Locate an empty memory module slot on the underside of the computer. NOTE If no memory slot is available, you must remove a module by performing steps 2-3 of “Removing a memory module” on page 57.
