Back to Contents Page Communication Cards Dell™ XPS™ M1730 Service Manual Subscriber Identity Module Wireless Mini Cards Flash Cache Module Subscriber Identity Module Subscriber Identity Modules (SIM) identify users uniquely through an International Mobile Subscriber Identity. 1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin. 2. In the battery bay, locate the SIM compartment. 3. Slide in the SIM into the compartment as indicated on the battery bay. Wireless Mini Cards If you ordered a Mini-Card with your computer, the card is already installed. Your computer supports two types of wireless Mini-Cards: l Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) l Mobile Broadband or Wireless Wide Area Network (WWAN) 1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin. 2. Remove the hinge cover and keyboard. See Removing the Hinge Cover and Removing the Keyboard. 3. Ground yourself by touching one of the metal connectors on the back of the computer. 4. If a Mini-Card is not already installed, go to step 5. If you are replacing a Mini-Card, remove the existing card: a. Disconnect the antenna cables from the card. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTE: Only GSM (HSDPA) type cards need a SIM. EVDO cards do not use a SIM. 1 battery bay 2 SIM CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To help prevent damage to the system board, you must remove the battery from the battery bay before you begin working inside the computer. CAUTION: Before you begin any of the procedures in this section, follow the safety instructions located in the Product Information Guide. NOTICE: To prevent damage to the system board, remove the main battery before you service the computer. NOTE: If you leave the area, ground yourself again when you return to the computer. b. Release the card by pushing the metal securing tab away from the card until the card pops up slightly. c. Slide the card at a 45-degree angle out of its connector. 5. Install the card: a. Move any cables out of the way to make space for the Mini-Card. b. Align the card with the connector at a 45-degree angle, and press the card into the connector until it clicks. 6. Connect the antenna cables to the Mini-Card, ensuring that you route the cables correctly. 7. Replace the keyboard and the hinge cover. Flash Cache Module The FCM, or Flash Cache Module, is an internal memory card that helps improve the performance of your computer. The FCM card is also known as Intel® Turbo Memory and the Intel® Flash Cache Logic Chip Mini-card. NOTE: Depending on the type of Mini-Card you have, not all cables may be in use. 1 antenna cables 1 metal securing tab NOTE: Do not insert a Mobile Broadband (WWAN) network card into the WLAN card connector. NOTE: The Mini-Card may have two or three connectors, depending on the type of card you ordered. NOTICE: The connectors are keyed to ensure correct insertion. If you feel resistance, check the connectors and realign the card. NOTICE: To avoid damaging the Mini PCI card, never place cables on top of or under the card. NOTE: For more specific information about which cable to connect to which connector, see the documentation that came with your Mini-Card. If you ordered an FCM card with your computer, the card is already installed. Removing the FCM 1. Follow the procedures in Before You Begin. 2. Remove the hinge cover and keyboard. See Removing the Hinge Cover and Removing the Keyboard. 3. Ground yourself by touching one of the metal connectors on the back of the computer. 4. Release the FCM by pushing the metal securing tab away from the card until the card pops up slightly. 5. Slide the FCM at a 45-degree angle out of its connector. Replacing the FCM 1. Insert the FCM connector at a 45-degree angle into the system board connector labeled "FCM" either in the WLAN or WWAN card compartment. 2.
