If the computer has been running recently, the memory module(s) may be hot. The surrounding area may also be hot. Allow the module(s) to cool to room temperature before replacing it. Avoid touching the cover, the module(s), and the surrounding area before they have cooled. Failure to follow these directions could result in minor bodily injury. To avoid damaging the computer’s screws, use a small Phillips screwdriver that is in good condition. 51 Adding memory (optional) Installing a memory module with the computer’s power on may damage the computer, the module, or both. The computer has two memory slots—Slot A and Slot B. You can install one or two memory modules. Before you install or remove a memory module, turn off the computer using the Start menu. If you install or remove a memory module while the computer is in Sleep or Hibernation mode, data will be lost. NOTE For this model, Slot A is the slot on the right-hand side of the memory compartment, when looking from the front of the computer. Slot B is the slot on the left-hand side. If only one memory module is to be installed, it must be installed in Slot A. If the computer is on, begin at step 1; otherwise, skip to step 3. 1 Click Start. Start button Shut down button (Sample Image) Shut down button 2 Click the Shut down button in the lower-right corner of the Start menu. The computer closes all open programs, shuts down the operating system, and then turns off. 3 Unplug and remove any cables connected to the computer, including the AC adaptor. 4 Close the display panel and turn the computer upside down. 5 Remove the main battery. Static electricity can damage the memory module. Before you handle the module, touch a grounded metal surface to discharge any static electricity you may have built up. 53 Adding memory (optional) Avoid touching the connector on the memory module or on the computer. Grease or dust on the connector may cause memory access problems. 9 Carefully remove the new memory module from its antistatic packaging, without touching its connector. 10 Locate an empty memory module slot on the underside of the computer. NOTE If no memory slot is available, you must remove a module by performing steps 2-3 of “Removing a memory module” on page 56.
