A standard full-size keyboard has two Enter, Ctrl, and Alt keys; editing keys; cursor positioning keys; and a numeric keypad. Pressing the Fn key simultaneously in combination with one of the specially marked keys allows you to emulate a full-size keyboard. 88 88 Learning the Basics Using the keyboard Your computer’s keyboard has only one Enter and one Ctrl key. Most of the time, this does not matter. However, some programs assign separate functions to the right and left Ctrl and Alt keys, or to the regular and numeric pad Enter keys on the full-sized keyboard. Using the Fn key, you can simulate these separate keys, as follows: . Press Fn and Ctrl simultaneously to simulate the Ctrl key on the right side of the enhanced keyboard. . Press Fn and Enter simultaneously to simulate the Enter key on the numeric pad of the enhanced keyboard. Ctrl, Fn, and Alt keys AltCtrl Fn Sample Ctrl, Fn, and Alt keys The Ctrl, Fn, and Alt keys do different things depending on the program you are using. For more information, see your program documentation. Function keys The function keys (not to be confused with the Fn key) are the 12 keys at the top of the keyboard. Sample function keys F1 through F12 are called function keys because they execute programmed functions when pressed. Used in combination with the Fn key, function keys marked with icons execute specific functions on the computer. For example, Fn+F9 turns off the TouchPad. Windows key—Opens the Start menu . Application key—Has the same function as the secondary mouse button Overlay keys The keys with gray numbers and symbols on the front of them form the numeric and cursor overlay. This overlay lets you enter numeric data or control the cursor as you would using the 10-key keypad on a desktop computer’s keyboard. Sample numeric and cursor control overlay Application key Windows key 90 90 Learning the Basics Starting a program Using the overlay to type numeric data The keys with the numbers on their right front are the numeric overlay keys. To turn the numeric overlay on, press Fn and F11 simultaneously. The numeric mode light on the keyboard indicator panel glows when the numeric overlay is on. To disable the numeric overlay, hold down the Fn key and press F11 again. The numeric mode light on the keyboard indicator panel goes out.
