Never pick up the computer by its display panel or by the back (where the ports are located). Although your notebook computer is built to withstand reasonable shock and vibration, transport it in a carrying case for long trips. You can purchase a carrying case from your Toshiba dealer (To stay current on the most recent software and hardware options for your computer, and for other product information, be sure to regularly check the Toshiba Web site at accessories.toshiba.com). Using a computer lock You may want to secure your computer to a heavy object such as your desk. The easiest way to do this is to purchase an optional PORT-Noteworthy® computer lock cable. Sample PORT-Noteworthy® computer lock cable To secure the computer: 1 Loop the cable through or around some part of a heavy object. Make sure there is no way for a potential thief to slip the cable off the object. 2 Pass the locking end through the loop. 72 72 72d Caring for your computer 3 Insert the cable’s locking end into the security lock slot, then rotate the key a quarter turn and remove it. The computer is now securely locked to deter computer theft. Sample locking the computer Chapter 2 Learning the Basics This chapter lists some computing tips and provides important information about basic features. Computing tips . Save your work frequently. Your work temporarily stays in the computer’s memory until you save it to the disk. You will lose all unsaved work, if, for example, a system error occurs and you must restart your computer, or your battery runs out of charge while you are working. Your computer can be configured to warn you when the battery is running low. See “Power management” on page 106. HINT: Some programs have an automatic save feature which you can turn on. Scan all new files for viruses. This precaution is especially important for files you receive via diskette, email, or download from the Internet. . Take frequent breaks to avoid repetitive-motion injuries and eyestrain. . Do not turn off the computer if a drive indicator light indicates a drive is active.
