When smoke is detected, the alarm sounds a loud local alarm. Twenty seconds after the local alarm sounds, the built-in transmitter sends a digitally coded wireless signal to its companion receiver. The wireless signal will be repeated every 20 seconds as long as smoke is still present. The digital DXS code format features over a million possible codes. The DXS transmitters are precoded at the factory to unique codes, so no fi eld coding is required. The DXS-73 can send three different codes: alarm, test and low battery status. For versatility, any transmitter can be programmed into any receiver channel. Receivers must be programmed to the transmitter’s code before system testing and operation. Refer to the receiver’s instructions for details on programming. The unit is powered by a 3-volt lithium battery. The battery is supplied with the transmitter and can power the unit for up to fi ve years. Every hour, the DXS-73 will send a status transmission to the receiver. The hourly signal updates the receiver to the transmitter’s condition. By monitoring status transmissions, the receiver can determine if a transmitter has a low battery. If the battery voltage drops below a preset level the alarm will sound low battery beeps and a low battery signal will be sent to the receiver with status reports (some receivers can report low battery status, others cannot). The green LED will be off. Pressing the test switch will silence the chirp for 12 hours but will not affect the LEDs. During this silence period, the test switch is disabled. If an alarm condition occurs while the detector is in this chirp silence mode, the alarm will sound. Once the alarm condition has been removed and the detector returns to the standby state, the low battery chirp will resume every 45 seconds. . Ceiling mounted smoke alarms should be located in the center of the room or hall, or not less than 4 inches from any wall. When the alarm is mounted on a wall, the top of the alarm should be 4 to 12 inches from the ceiling. . Do not install smoke alarms where normal ambient temperatures are above 100°F (37.8°C), or below 40°F (4°C). Also, do not locate alarm in front of air conditioners, heating registers, or other locations where normal air circulation will keep smoke from entering the detector. A-2.5.2.1 Smoke Detection - Are More Smoke Alarms Desirable? The required number of smoke alarms might not provide reliable early warning protection for those areas separated by a door from the areas protected by the required smoke alarms. For this reason, it is recommended that the householder consider the use of additional smoke alarms for those areas for increased protection. The additional areas include the basement, bedrooms, dining room, furnace room, utility room, and hallways not protected by the required smoke alarms. The installation of smoke alarms in kitchens, attics (finished or unfinished), or garages is not normally recommended, as these locations occasionally experience conditions that can result in improper operation. Smoke alarms are not to be used with detector guards unless the combination has been evaluated and found suitable for the purpose. STANDARD FOR ALARM LOCATION The DXS-73 should be installed in accordance with National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard 72, which reads as follows: 2-1.1.1 Smoke alarms shall be installed outside of each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms and on each additional story of the family living unit including basements and excluding crawl spaces and unfinished attics. In new construction, a smoke alarm shal...
