SAFETY FIRST CAUTION Gasoline is extremely flammable. • Always shut down the engine and allow the engine to cool before refueling. • Do not smoke, light matches, or use lighters while refueling. • Use only approved containers to carry or dispense gasoline, set the container on the ground during fill, do not place the container is an enclosed area such as a trunk. Do not fill on the bed of a truck. • Keep nozzle in contact with the container to prevent static electric ignition of fuel vapors. • Remove fuel soaked clothing immediately. • Keep machine fuel tank cap vent clear and open. CAUTION Use only safety approved and labeled containers for fuel storage and transportation. Do not store gasoline in glass or unapproved containers. • Fill the container at a slow rate to decrease chances of vapor ignition. • Manually control fuel dispensing to avoid splashing and overfill. • Fill container only 95 percent to allow for expansion. • Gasoline will cause skin irritation. Keep face and skin away from gasoline. Do not use gasoline to wash hands. • Do not siphon gasoline. • Avoid prolonged breathing of gasoline fumes. • When transporting gasoline make sure container is secure and cannot tip, slide, or fall. CAUTION FUEL Do not use fuels (gasoline) that exceed E10 (10%) ethanol. Fuel exceeding 10% ethanol helps corrode metals, degrade and permeate fuel hoses, plastics and other materials; causes engine to run hot and adversely affect durability and emissions; attracts water into the fuel and causes fuel to separate into gasoline and water layers which causes poor engine performance and starting. Excessive ethanol in fuel also causes fuel tank and fuel hose leaks and possible fire. BUSH HOG® UTILITY VEHICLE WORKSHOP MANUAL – SECTION 4: FUEL SYSTEM DESCRIPTION NOTICE: The engine manufacturer has included the engine carburetors, fuel pump and components in their service manual. See the manufacturer’s manual for fuel system diagnostics and repair. The machine uses a 7-gallon composite type fuel tank to storage fuel for the engine. The fuel tank is mounted underneath the operator’s seat. CAUTION Use only approved fuel hose for routing fuel to the engine. Rubber hoses not intended for fuel can deteriorate quickly causing leaks and contamination of the engine fuel system. A fuel hose is connected between the fuel tank outlet and an inline fuel filter. The filter is connected to the carburetor with a fuel hose. The filter must be changed on a regular basis to prevent contamination or plugging of the fuel system. See the operator’s manual for filter replacement schedules. A dual element air cleaner is mounted on the right side of the machine below the operator’s seat. The outer element prevents dust, dirt, and contaminates from entering the engine fuel system. The inner element acts as a safety filter to prevent minute particles from entering the fuel system. During engine operation a cyclonic type action takes place in the air cleaner housing forcing contaminates away from the elements and into a rubber flapper valve mounted on the down side of the cleaner assembly. This valve automatically dumps contaminates during operation. The flapper valve should be inspected regularly and cleaned or replaced as necessary. A float type fuel level sending device is mounted in the fuel tank. The sender is a variable resistor that changes value as the float falls or rises and transmits a regulated ground to the fuel gauge. The fuel gauge has constant 12DC volts of switched power and is regulated by the application of the ground from the sending unit. A throttle pedal mounted underneath the dashboard on the left side of the machine allows the operator to control engine fuel supply for travel speeds. A throttle cable connects the pedal to the carburetor linkage.
