The VAIO Power Management function is added to the Windows Power Options. With this software application, you can enhance the Windows power management functions to ensure better operation of your computer and longer battery life. Selecting a Power Plan When you start the computer, a power status icon appears on the taskbar. This icon indicates what kind of power source you are currently using. Click this icon to display the window that shows your power status. To select a power plan 1 Right-click the power status icon on the taskbar and select Power Options. 2 Select your desired power plan. To change the power plan settings 1 Click Change plan settings on the right of your desired power plan in the Power Options window. Change the Sleep mode and display settings as needed. 2 If you need to change the advanced settings, click Change advanced power settings and go to step 3. Otherwise, click Save changes. 3 Click the VAIO Power Management tab. Change the settings for each item. 4 Click OK. Customizing Your VAIO Computer > Protecting Data from Unauthorized Use n131 N Protecting Data from Unauthorized Use Disabling Built-in Devices You can use one of the BIOS functions to disable the following built-in devices and prohibit external connections and communications. . USB Ports . Memory Card Slot ("Memory Stick Duo" slot and SD memory card slot) . Optical Disc Drive (built-in optical disc drive) . Wireless Devices (wireless LAN, WiMAX, wireless WAN, BLUETOOTH, and GPS functions) . LAN Device (LAN port) . The built-in devices you can disable depends on the model you purchased. Customizing Your VAIO Computer > Protecting Data from Unauthorized Use n132 N To disable built-in devices 1 Turn on the computer and press the F2 key repeatedly until the VAIO logo disappears. The BIOS setup screen appears. If the screen does not appear, restart the computer and try again. 2 Press the < or , key to select Advanced. 3 Press the M or m key to select your desired built-in device, and press the Enter key. 4 Press the M or m key to select Disabled and press the Enter key. . To enable the device, select Enabled instead of Disabled. 5 If you want to disable more built-in devices, repeat steps 4 and 5 for each device. 6 Press the < or , key to select Exit, select Exit Setup, and then press the Enter key. At the confirmation prompt, press the Enter key. Customizing Your VAIO Computer > Protecting the Hard Disk n133 N Protecting the Hard Disk If your computer is equipped with a built-in hard disk drive, then the hard disk drive protection function is available. This function protects your hard disk drive against shock hazards. See the specifications to find out about the configuration of your computer. ! Be aware that the hard disk drive protection function does not work for the solid state drive. The hard disk drive protection function is designed to minimize possibilities of damage to hard disk drives and user data. It does not ensure 100% data protection under any circumstances. Upgrading Your VAIO Computer > Upgrading Your VAIO Computer > 4 N Upgrading Your VAIO Computer Your VAIO computer and memory modules use high precision components and electronic connectors technology. To avoid invalidation of the warranty during your product warranty period, we recommend that: . You should contact your dealer to install a new memory module. . You should not install it yourself, if you are not familiar with upgrading memory on a computer. . You should not touch the connectors or open the memory module compartment cover. For assistance, contact an authorized Sony service/support center. To find the nearest center or agent, see Finding More about Your VAIO Computer (page 5). The type of module and the amount of memory installed on your computer may differ depending on the model you purchased. See the specifications to find out about the configuration of your computer. Upgrading Your VAIO Computer > Adding and Removing Memory n135 N Adding and Removing Memory If you want to expand the functionality of your computer, you can increase the amount of memory by replacing the installed memory module. Before you upgrade your computer's memory, read the notes and procedures in the following pages. Notes on adding memory modules . Be sure to place your computer on a flat surface before adding or removing memory modules. . Be careful when changing memory. Improper installation of memory modules may cause damage to your system. This damage may void your manufacturer's warranty. . Only use memory modules that are compatible with your computer. If a memory module is not detected by the computer or the Windows operating system becomes unstable, contact the sales dealer or the manufacturer of your memory module. . Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can damage electronic components. Before touching a memory module, ensure the following: .
