You can connect a USB-compatible printer to your computer through the USB ports. To determine if the printer is USB compatible, check its documentation. To make the connection, you need a suitable USB cable which may come with your printer. If a USB cable was not included with your printer, you can purchase one from a computer or electronics store. If your printer supports Plug and Play, your computer will automatically recognize the printer; the printer is then ready for use. Refer to your printer documentation for further instructions. TECHNICAL NOTE: To determine if your printer supports Plug and Play, check its documentation. If your printer does not support Plug and Play, you can set up the printer as described in “Setting up a printer” on page 82. To connect a printer to your computer: 1 Connect the printer cable to the printer and then connect the other end to one of the computer’s USB ports. 2 Plug the printer’s power cable into a live AC outlet. 82 82 Getting Started Connecting a printer Setting up a printer NOTE Some printers require a specific installation process. Refer to your printer installation guide for instructions before completing the following procedure. If your printer does not support Plug and Play, follow these steps to set it up for the first time. You only need to set up the printer once. 1 Click Start, Printers and Faxes. The Printers and Faxes window appears. 2 Click Add a printer. The Add Printer Wizard appears. (Sample Image) Add Printer Wizard 3 Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your printer. (Sample Illustration) Connecting an optional external USB diskette drive 84 84 Getting Started Turning off the computer Turning off the computer Pressing the power button before shutting down the Microsoft Windows® operating system could cause you to lose your work. Make sure the system indicator panel’s disk light and the drive-in-use light are off. If you turn off the power while a disk is being accessed, you may lose data or damage the disk and/or drive. It is a good idea to turn off your computer when you are not using it for a while. If you are using the computer for the first time, leave the computer plugged into a power source (even though the computer is off) to fully charge the main battery. Options for turning off the computer Depending on the operating system installed, you have more than one option available for turning off the computer: Turn Off or Shut Down, Hibernate, and Standby.
