3 Type a file name, then click Save. HINT: To make another copy of the file you are currently working with, choose Save As from the File menu and give the new file a different name. The Windows® XP operating system supports file names of up to 255 characters; the names can include spaces. Some applications still require file names limited to eight characters. File names The Windows XP operating system supports long file names which can contain up to 255 characters and can include spaces. Some applications do not support long file names and require file names limited to no more than eight characters. You may use all the letters and numbers on the keyboard plus these characters: _ ^ $ ~ ! # % & { } ( ) @ and ‘. File names are not case-sensitive. Learning the Basics Learning the Basics Printing your work Using a file extension Most programs assign an extension to the file name that identifies the file as being created in the program with a particular format. For example, Microsoft Word saves files with a .doc extension. Any file name with an extension of “.doc” is assumed to be a Microsoft Word file. Creating your own extension is usually unwise, since the program is unlikely to recognize a strange extension and may refuse to handle your file correctly. TECHNICAL NOTE: By default, the Windows® XP operating system does not show file extensions. For information on showing or hiding file extensions, see your Windows® XP online help. Printing your work Ensure the operating system is set up for your printer as described in “Setting up your printer” on page 81. HINT: You only need to set up the printer the first time you connect it. If you use more than one printer or are changing printers, you will need to set up the Windows® XP Professional operating system to run with the additional printer(s). To print a file: 1 If your printer is not on, turn it on now. 2 Open the File menu of your Windows® program and click Print. 98 98 98 Using the DVD-ROM or multi-function drive The program displays a Print dialog box. Sample Print dialog box 3 Specify the print parameters. For example, the range of pages and number of copies to print. 4 Click Print. Using the DVD-ROM or multi-function drive Optical storage has become the preferred medium for software, music, and video. Digital versatile discs (DVDs) provide a significant increase in data storage and support features that are not available on any other video platform. These features include wide-screen movies, multiple language tracks, digital surround sound, multiple camera angles, and interactive menus. For these reasons, your computer may come with a DVDROM drive or multi-function drive. Learning the Basics Learning the Basics Using the DVD-ROM or multi-function drive TECHNICAL NOTE: Your DVD-ROM or multi-function drive is set to play region 1 (North America) DVD-ROMs. If you play a DVD disc from another region, the drive will automatically change to play in the format of the other region. The drive will allow you to change regions four times. On the fourth change, the region will be “locked in.” That is, the drive will only play DVDs from that last region. Note that changing from region 1 to region 2 and back to region 1 is counted as two changes. NOTE For optimum CD and DVD performance, it is recommended that you play CDs and DVDs while running the computer on AC power. Doing so could cause the drive to malfunction. 100 Learning the Basics Using the DVD-ROM or multi-function drive Manual eject hole—Use if you need to release the disc tray when the power is off. Use a straightened paper clip or other narrow object to press the manual eject button located inside the hole. Never use a pencil to press the manual eject button.
