The Shut Down menu appears. Arrow Start Shut Down Menu (Sample Image) Shut Down menu 2 Click Shut Down. The operating system turns off the computer. 3 Unplug and remove any cables connected to the computer, including the AC adaptor. 4 Remove the main battery. For information on removing the main battery, see “Removing the battery from the computer” on page 116. 5 Close the display panel and turn the computer upside down to locate the memory module slot cover. Back of computer (Sample Illustration) Removing the memory module slot cover 7 Remove the memory module slot cover. 8 Place the screws and the cover in a safe place so that you can retrieve them later. Static electricity can damage the memory module. Before you handle the module, touch a grounded metal surface to discharge any static electricity you may have built up. Avoid touching the connector on the memory module or on the computer. Grease or dust on the connector may cause memory access problems. 9 Carefully remove the new memory module from its antistatic packaging, without touching its connector. 10 Locate an empty memory module slot on the underside of the computer. NOTE If no memory slot is available, you must remove a module by performing steps 2-3 of “Removing a memory module” on page 57. NOTE NOTE NOTE 11 For this model Slot A is the bottom slot. Slot B is the top slot. If only one memory module is to be installed, it must be installed in Slot A. Pick up the memory module by its sides, avoiding any contact with its connector. (Sample Illustration) Inserting the memory module into the socket 56 56 56d Adding memory (optional) 13 Once the module’s connector is fully inserted into the socket, press downward on the top edge of the module to seat the module into the latches at the sides of the socket. These latches should “snap” into place securely with the corresponding cutouts in the side of the module. The memory module should be completely inserted into the socket and level when secured in place. If only one memory module is to be installed, it must be installed in Slot A. 14 Replace the memory module slot cover and secure it using the screws. For more information on inserting the main battery, see “Inserting a charged battery” on page 118. Turn the computer right side up. Reconnect the cables. 18 Restart the computer. TECHNICAL NOTE: You must have at least one memory module installed for the computer to work. You can now continue setting up the computer. When the operating system has loaded, you can verify that the computer has recognized the additional memory module. If you are adding extra memory after setting up the computer, verify that the computer has recognized it correctly as described in “Checking total memory” on page 59. Removing a memory module If you need to remove a memory module: 1 Complete steps 1–8 in “Installing a memory module” on page 52 to shut down the computer and open the memory module slot cover. Do not try to remove a memory module with the computer turned on. You can damage the computer and the memory module. Do not remove the memory module while the computer is in Sleep or Hibernation mode. The computer could hang up the next time you turn it on and data in memory will be lost. In either of the above cases, the Sleep configuration will not be saved. 58 58 58d Adding memory (optional) NOTE The following screen may appear when you turn on the power: If “Start Windows® Normally” is highlighted, then press Enter. If one of the Safe Mode options is highlighted, it is best to press Enter to go into Safe Mode, then shut down and restart the system, at which time Windows® should boot back up normally. When Safe Mode is suggested, this could be a sign that you may need to scan your internal storage drive for errors or defragment the drive.
